Vermont Small Claims Court Limit
Small Claims Court (Civil Division, Superior Court)
Injury: 3 years
Vermont doubled its small claims limit from $5,000 to $10,000 in 2023. Vermont also allows parties to resolve cases by submitting written evidence only — without appearing in person — in some circumstances.
About Vermont Small Claims Court
Vermont small claims are filed in the Superior Court's Civil Division and now cover disputes up to $10,000 following a 2023 expansion. Attorneys are allowed. Vermont has a 6-year statute of limitations for contracts and 3 years for personal injury. Filing fees are $65–$90. A unique Vermont option allows parties to submit written materials to the court without appearing in person in some straightforward cases. Losing parties may appeal.
