When to Use This Template

  • A contractor started a job and did not complete it
  • A contractor completed work that is materially defective or does not match the agreed scope
  • A contractor collected a deposit and never showed up or started the work
  • You have already attempted to resolve the issue directly with the contractor without success

After You Send the Letter

  1. 1Send the letter via certified mail with return receipt requested and keep a copy for your records.
  2. 2Attach copies (not originals) of: the written contract, all payment receipts, photos documenting the issue, and any repair or completion estimates.
  3. 3If the contractor is licensed, consider also filing a complaint with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) at tdlr.texas.gov.
  4. 4If unresolved by the deadline, you may file a claim in Texas Justice Court for disputes up to $20,000.
